Funds of funds investing means that you put your money in several investment funds rather than investing in individual stocks and bonds
There are different types depending on who holds the funds. If they are managed by different companies then it is called unfettered. You want to do your homework before making any investment whether it is in a funds of funds or elsewhere. This type of investment is a collective one that includes investing in mutual funds, private equity and hedge funds. Most funds of funds investment have both pros and cons so make sure that you understand what you are doing before making that investment. The pro is that you have diversity and in today's world this can be a good thing. Putting all of your money into one investment and hoping that it will continue to go up forever is not a good strategy. You need to be able to absorb the ups and downs and the best way to accomplish this is to have your money spread out so that when one sector is on the decline another is on the rise. Then you are only worried about averages and having enough of your fund going up rather than down. The con to a funds of funds investment is that you will have to pay large fees. If you are not investing a large amount of money to start then these fees can really take a bite out of your money quickly. You do not want to be paying large fees on a fund when you are trying to build up a nest egg or wealth. Investing your money should bring you a good return but if you have to pay large fees that money could end up being a lot less. When deciding whether or not you want to invest in a funds of funds you need to weight all the options. It is good to diversify your money so that you can grow it on a steady basis. With this type of investment you will get that diversity. You want to make sure you also understand that there will be a manager that will charge fees for all of the different types of funds you invest in. These fees can be high and you need to be aware of all cost before putting your money in a fund of fund. |
