It can be very scarey to think you are about to retire. It doesn’t have to be that way
Hopefully the children are grown and out of the house, raising their own children In this article I will give you some simple suggestions about things you should be doing to make your retirement the great time it should be. First, sit down with your financial adviser and make sure the savings you have put away for your retirement is properly invested. The type of investments you had while working may not be the ones you want during your retirement. It is also not a bad idea to speak to your accountant so he or she can explain to you what your tax obligations will be so that you have no big shocks at tax time. Secondly, I suggest you get yourself down to the social security office and speak with one of the knowledgeable people there. This way you will know what benefits you are entitled to based on your age. Many of us don’t understand social security. They are very nice about filling you in. Don’t just take your benefits for granted. Third, you must look in to whether you are eligible for Medicare. Having proper insurance coverage is essential when you retire. Many large companies offer retirement benefits. So be sure to see what your company offers. If you will be receiving Medicare and do not have insurance from your previous employer you must find a supplemental insurance carrier. This does not have to be difficult or expensive. A good place to start is if you are a member of AARP they offer great plans. If you do not to join one of AARP plans most large insurance companies offer very good supplemental insurance plans that are not very expensive. If you or your spouse take a lot of medicines you may also want to consider a drug plan. They are not very expensive and well worth the premium. Fourth, deciding where you want to live. Before you run off quickly to some retirement community I would spend some time thinking about it. You may even want to rent a place for a year in the new location before you sell your house. Too many folks sell their house and live to regret it. You will be going through so many changes when you retire changing where you live can be very traumatic. Fifth, the most important thing you must do when you retire is to stay busy, All those years you couldn’t wait to do nothing well that was a joke. Nothing will bring you down faster than doing nothing. Your physical and mental health will both decline. Now is the time for all of those projects you never had time to do before. If there is nothing specific you want to do take up a hobby. One thing that is really wonderful to do if you are retired is to travel. If you do not work you can go off season when there are few crowds. Also many tour companies off great senior citizen rates so don’t be a fool and take advantage of these great deals. Sixth, a very good thing to do when you retire is to consider a part time job. Many companies love to hire part time people because they save on expensive benefit packages. You will come with your own benefits. This is the time you may want to try a whole new line of work. Some companies are looking for people like you because you offer the experience of life and that can’t be bought. Earning a little extra money can give you some cash to do some of the things you couldn’t do before. Just make sure with Social Security how much you can earn before you are penalized.. Lastly, keep in mind retirement doesn’t mean this is the end of your life, but instead a whole new beginning. So take advantage and enjoy every minute of retirement life. |
